Private Selection™ and Simply Truth®: Every grocery store now offers it’s very own private labels. It’s not a novelty anymore. Some more than others but it will be rare not to find owned private brands by a retail store anymore. Kroger offers some of the best selection of owned brands including Big K®, Wholesome@Home™, Fresh Selections by Kroger®, Home Sense®, Comforts for Baby®, Private Selection™ and Simple Truth®. Both the latter brands enjoy wide popularity amongst grocery shoppers, but Simple Truth® has become more and more popular in the past couple of months owing to the extensive selection and being a budget-friendly organic brand. Private Selection is Kroger’s gourmet food line. They offer some of the most exceptional sauces, dressings, and marinades! If you haven’t already tried one, we urge you to do that as soon as possible. Believe us you won’t regret it

Kroger App: More and more shoppers now enjoy online grocery shopping. We can’t rave enough about the Kroger App. If you were too lazy to try it until now. You are missing out on some great deals. You can download the app and have the digital coupons and the weekly savings ads at your fingertips while grocery shopping. We bet you love savings as much as we do.

Kroger Loyalty Card: If you are someone who doesn’t sign up for loyalty programs because all it does is spam your inbox, we suggest you make an exception for this one. In addition to saving a great deal of money, you will get access to all the exclusive deals meant for Kroger loyalty card. 3 Foods To Include In Your Kid’s Diet This Summer

Now that the kids are back-to-school after summer vacation we bet you are enjoying the much-needed time alone at home.  However, if you are a mom that is always worried about her child’s nutrition when they are out of sight maybe you aren’t exactly thrilled and skeptical about the food choices they are making. In this case, we can help. The looming question is – Can children eat healthy, yet enjoy their favorite summer foods? The answer is – yes if they are eating the right combinations throughout the day. There is no reason for you to ban their favorite foods from your pantry. Follow our nutrition guide to make the most of the gorgeous Texas Summer.

Summer Foods for Kids

  • Healthy Rule 1:  As the famous saying goes – “It starts with you”. Hence, be a good role model for your kids when it comes to nutrition. No matter how young, your kids notice the food choices you make and imitate them. So, don’t have a burger for breakfast while you expect your kids to drink a green smoothie. Endorse foods that you want your kids to eat and refrain from the foods that could prove to be detrimental for your and their health in the long run.
  • Healthy Rule 2:  There are parent’s that don’t introduce sugary treats to their kids until they are a certain age and then there are others who start early. Decide on which side do you want to be on. Sugar in an appropriate amount is healthy for kids overall health and development, so you don’t necessarily have to abstain them but do keep a check on how much sugar are they consuming on an everyday basis.
  • Healthy Rule 3: We are all guilty of taking the easy way out when it comes to nutrition – For example, it’s easier to hand a cookie than make a smoothie for a snack. This approach might solve the immediate problem, but ultimately it will usually determine their future foods habits. Don’t get us wrong – you should never deprive your children of the fantastic food out there, but it’s important to know what to eat and when.

Three things your kids must eat this summer

  • Greek Yogurt: We don’t need to recap how healthy yogurt is for the gut. If you haven’t already introduced this wonder of food in their diet, start this summer with a healthy smoothie or a shake.
  • Water Melon: If you’re lucky your kids love watermelon but if you are like most of us your kids give you a hard time about eating fruits and most likely don’t come anywhere near melon. This fruit is a powerhouse of nutrition and water. Something your kids could use to beat the intense Texas heat.
  • Cucumber: This humble produce can be included in the daily diet of your kids without much effort. Include it in salads, sides, green smoothies and shakes. One of the healthiest foods to eat all year round but specifically in summer due to its high-water content.

5 nutrition mistakes to avoid as a Mom

Parenting is not the easiest job in this world. As a parent, you are always struggling to keep up with expectations while juggling many roles. The situation is definitely more challenging for moms as they are constantly balancing work and family needs. The juggling act can be a cause of great stress and concern for women. In the midst of taking care of responsibilities, it’s easy to ignore nutrition. Here are some nutrition mistakes to avoid as a mom:

Mom with kid- burpy

Mom with kid- burpy

  • Not introducing them to the new foods: We all have certain household favorites when it comes to food. It’s not rare to hear someone hear no one eats plum in my house or we are a vegan household. By nature, your children’s eating preferences will be a reflection of your personal eating habits. While it’s good to stick with the favorites, you don’t want to make food decisions in the grocery store with a personal bias. You might not personally like a kale smoothie, but do not make that decision for your kids before giving it a try.
  • Dieting in front of your kids: We understand every mom’s personal nutrition struggle. As you age so does your body and you rely on good old dieting every now and then to get back into shape. However, a word of caution, it’s a scientific fact that kids imitate their parent’s eating habits. You do not want to starve yourself or make an unhealthy eating decision in front of impressionable kids.
  • You rely upon takeaway food: Convenience should never supersede nutrition especially when it comes to your children. Are you a household that’s excessively dependent on takeaway or frozen food. While they are not necessarily unhealthy extreme reliance on them isn’t a solution. Their habit as kids will largely impact their nutritional choices as adults.
  • Too many sugary and processed foods: Kids love sugar and we all can agree that a cookie is a great way to bribe them every now and then. However, you don’t want your kids to consume processed food too often. Don’t give in to their tantrums too often, these foods can be detrimental to their overall health and weight.
  • Entertaining food tantrums: Nobody wants their kids to not eat a meal. However, if your kid only wants to eat waffles with whipped cream every day, you should be a little concerned. We understand introducing them to new, especially healthy food is not easy but giving up too soon is not a great way to develop their relationship with food.

6 foods you should consider buying organic

Grocery shopping can be an overwhelming weekly mission. You make numerous significant decisions about the nutritional requirements of your family during what seems like the most insignificant task of the week – grocery shopping.

You are often bombarded with a plethora of choices at grocery stores – sugar-free vs regular desserts? Gluten-free vs whole wheat? GMO vs Non-GMO foods? frozen vs fresh? One big question we all can relate to is organic is really better than conventional options?  Let’s understand.

Organic Food at Burpy

Organic food

There is an increasing amount of research available online that clearly explains why organic food is better. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certification mandates that for any food to be called organic it should be grown without chemical pesticides and be free of GMOs. Hence, it is not just a fancy label, but a clear indication of how the produce or product has been developed. This is also the reason why organic food is often more expensive. Here are some foods that you should consider buying organic-

  • Strawberries: They are constantly ranked as top food contaminated with pesticides. Strawberries have a short shelf life, hence even if you store them in the best way possible they don’t last more than 7-8 days. Consider washing them with a mix of water and apple cider winner and try investing in organic strawberries.
  • Apples: They are often highly contaminated because of the pesticide spraying process.  You often think washing is enough to remove the pesticides from the outer layer of the fruit but it is not enough. Switch to organic apples and see the difference.
  • Grapes: Naturally sweet and high in vitamins, eating grapes has several benefits. Unfortunately, they are also contaminated with strong pesticides. Wash them thoroughly before eating and select organic grapes over conventional options.
  • Spinach: If you are a salad lover, spinach will inevitably find its way in your kitchen. However, do you know a significant 97% conventional spinach sample contains pesticide residue? It can be detrimental to your health in the long run.
  • Tomatoes: This humble produce is often part of every meal in the household. Since it is practically used in every dish it is important to make sure you use the healthiest and most chemical-free option available and therefore we recommend organic tomatoes highly.
  • Dairy: If you are a home that loves its smoothies, cheese toast, and Greek yogurt. We recommend reaching out for organic dairy supplies – milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs. Certified organic dairy means the product is growth hormones free and cows did not receive any antibiotics.

If you are on a budget, reaching out for organic options can be a tricky task. We suggest starting small before introducing any big changes.
